Exodus 04:18
The Exodus was long as we began to leave my friends There was no sense of right or wrong and why did ya start to leave? and why did ya have to bleed? We were starting now to fly We were starting now to go blind We were starting now to see you and me Well, everyone was dead The scaffolding fell on their heads The words never seemed so obvious and why did you have to leave? and why did we have to bleed? We were starting now to fly We were starting now to go blind We were starting now to see you and me

There aint no more reward in this world for me except my sweet alcohol Roam the streets alone by the light of the moon, all I ever see is painted destruction And the wheel turns round and round Spinning up the whole damn town Leaving me up and down Broken hearted la da da la da da da This is a drunkard’s lament. Yes, I’ve come to confess I never meant nobody wrong All my good friends have gone Couldn’t take me no more All of my lies here in the bottle Well, the wheel turns round and round Spinning up the whole damn town Leaving me up and down Broken hearted la la da da la da da da- la da da la da da da

Graveyard 03:02
Graveyard on the south side of town man has got people like you. Graveyard on the south side of town man has got people like you. I don’t mind. Lord, I don’t mind what you do State pen down in Henderson County wears broken dreams Deep felt, cold desperation breeds a killing machine I don’t mind. Lord, I don’t mind what you see. Stand your ground my friends, don’t let go Crawl inside your cell, steel machine. I don’t mind. Lord, I don’t mind what you do. Graveyard blues Graveyard blues
4.
Rain 02:49
Rain There’s a man on the road, Blood shot eyes, rusted throat Hears the cars, has a smoke, passes time He sees fear start to fly in his darken sky There’s no will to survive, now it’s gone Now, the rain don’t feel that bad That bad That bad That bad There’s a stain on the door No one sees, all ignore Old man hears a child, then he’s gone He sees fear start to fly in his darken sky There’s no will to survive, now it’s gone Now, the rain don’t feel that bad that bad that bad that bad

I see widows, black veiled widows, kneeling by Sandy Creek They’re weeping and crying for my soul, please don’t waste your time on me I see angels, battalion of angels gathered around my feet One is speaking in tongues trying to save my soul the rest are just laughing at me I hear taping upon my window Hear scratching on my front door Well, I don’t mind now how long I got before I must go down slow Hello Satan, my well feared Satan You must be happy now It’s time pay for all I’ve done Bob, it’s the last fair deal going down I hear taping upon my window Hear scratching on my front door Well, I don’t mind now how long I got before I must go down slow

Heaven 03:34
The thief steals your parad worn out fingers leave no trace Ripped off slogans remain in bad taste Still, you’re going to heaven All my time is wrong Ill spent in topless bars where the men are fierce and money it cleans Ya know, we’re going to heaven Still, I think that the sound machines are reflecting me Cover me my friend, cover it black. Yeah, I stand in hallowed halls The Grand Ol’ Opry don’t move anymore Rhinestone cowboys have shit the floors All good singers are in heaven Yeah, the hooker says to her John I’m tired of the lousy blow jobs In dirty motels and parking lots Ya know, we’re going to heaven Still I think that the sound machines are reflecting me Cover me my friend, cover me black. Still I think that the sound machines are reflecting me Cover me my friend, cover me black. It was long, long time ago.

Watchtower 03:06
Stand by the watchtower See the light gather speed Wait for the guard man For his lustful, awful needs Oh stand by the water Wear the crown of thorns Go commit double murder Why die alone? Stand past the closed gate See the lines of age Time is your captor It won’t release the hidden shame Oh stand by the water Wear the crown of thorns Go commit double murder Why die alone? Oh stand by the water Wear the crown of thorns Go commit double murder Why die alone?

Man likes to kill ya that's right Likes to see life sucked your eyes Gloriously he stands so proud Ready to take that Monarch's holy crown Stand alert, the palace is burning, the horses are drowning, the wives are fucked. Man loves his ways of torturing babies Don't feed them that will serve their parents right Man like to see his name up in lights Just go out to that rock show tonight But there is no time to sow the seeds no more time to hide these empty words Cause I stand alone between three triggers and post never caressing the steel between my teeth Yes, man is just another monkey trying to evolve by using his logical mind but you're just a savage, just admit it! Then go on with your pathetic lie Lead us well, lead us into the path of shadows that you sell Teach us well, tell us everything we need to know and more I see the lights gather circles Excuse me those are just lines between the eyes And I've seen the colors on the TV Lie to me and tell me it's real life well, I don't care about slow moving targets I'll gather speed my trigger is pure and hot I can't run from the sight of these glorious bosses who command you with the pinky and the thumb Yeah, man likes to kill... It's only cautious observation.

Get up in the morning feeling tired and disgusted Lord, it’s another day Gotta go to work kiss ass til I choke A man’s got bills to pay Oh well, I’m sitting in the corner with my hands on my stomach Getting sicker and sicker everyday While the boss man struts his thirty-dollar cut all to the bank All to the bank Walking down the street I see a hooker and a priest Trying to make a back door Ya know, I’d stop to watch but I’m always on the clock Damn! I’m running ten minutes late Oh well, I walking through the door kind of feeling like the whore But at least she’s got a job that pays All while the boss man struts his thirty-dollar cut all to the bank All to the bank Take off for lunch Go pick up my gun from the local pawn shop Return to work with a smile on face Man, there’s always work to be done I walk though door, all covered by sores Boss a come creaming for me Oh sorry sir it won’t happen again If ya want, I’ll work here late If ya want, I’ll work here late If ya want, I’ll work here late If ya want, I’ll work here late

Engine 05:12
I think that I’m dying I think that I’m gone I think that I’ve forsaken all the good in my life Learned how to betray The cost is pain Hey now mama Don’t cry for me All secrets we must keep in the family You can never tell What would I be What would they say Hear the sound of the engine The wind it beats my pale cheek Hear the sound of the engine coming down Like to thank my good friend for the kind words we shared Wish I could stay a while but death does stare with a wicked grin Must move on over this cliff Hear the sound of the engine coming down all over me Hear the sound of the engine coming down I think that I’m dying I think that I’m gone I think that I’ve forsaken all the good in my life Learned how to betray

Execute 03:26
Hey Casanova, no it’s the preacher Take the hand of another man’s wife You can’t blame her lustful obsession The man sold eternal life Execute Take down your enemy Take away, take away your dignity Don’t mind the Southern Baptist Southern Baptist Ministry Woman started their neighborhood chatter Rumors spread, a lynch mob dispatched Hunting season is now in season Time to kill a holy man Execute Take down your enemy Take away, take away your dignity Don’t mind the Southern Baptist Southern Baptist Ministry Execute Take down your enemy Take away, take away your dignity Don’t mind the Southern Baptist Southern Baptist Ministry Yeah, The Ministry Yeah, The Ministry Yeah, The Ministry

The Wedding 03:50
My friend, you’re invited to the wedding I hope you would have the kindness to come The groom’s hands will be sweating now His life will pass before his eyes My friends all call me a loser They said, I was wasting my life But I owe so much, love that girl of mine My love did ruin my life Oh, Let her go now Henry Don’t let her red light bring you down Don’t let her haul you off when you’re at the other town Oh, let her go Henry Don’t let her bright light bring you down I don’t mind you baby hanging round. The sky it weeps for my life now The rain it covers up tears My love now has turned to resentment Now, all the things that I feared have come to pass Oh, Let her go now Henry Don’t let her red light bring you down Don’t let her haul you off when you’re at the other town Oh, let her go Henry Don’t let her red light bring you down I don’t mind my baby hanging round. I don’t mind my baby hanging round

9ft. Wall 03:11
This human race has made me so ill man There’s not one of you I wouldn’t kill The signs on the freeway The words that you like to say They remind me of what you sell So…Build me that is 9 feet tall to keep all you people away I’ll stand inside with my shotgun by my side Come closer, I’ll put you in your grave This human race is a stab in the back man They get ya before you get out of bed All the instructions, the blessed commandments Won’t shelter you from your death So…Build me that is 9 feet tall to keep all you people away I’ll stand inside with my shotgun by my side Come closer, I’ll put you in your grave I see the red line Golden high line Ooh it shuffle and moan I see my baby with golden coffer She shakes her head She’s ready to blow This human race is a pitiful fake man All the deals have been made We’re pining for the wrong things The mother is crying but in which bed does she lay? So…Build me that is 9 feet tall to keep all you people away I’ll stand inside with my shotgun by my side Come closer, I’ll put you in your grave I see the red line The golden high line Ooh it shuffle and moan I see my baby in golden coffer She shakes her head She’s ready to blow 9 Ft. walls I build

Beautiful 03:24
I spend my days counting the hours of how it used to be All my time I spend now searching how to cure my disease While the boys get drunk and the girls get high Oh, we spend our nights between her fingers All in in black and white Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never never let you go. You mean so much to me Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never never let you go. You mean so much to me Mary sits down on her barstool getting drunk Waves high to all the boys What a beautiful life it’s been All my time gone again It all seems so damn short While the boys get drunk and the girls get high Oh, we spend our nights between her fingers All in in black and white Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never never let you go. You mean so much to me Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never never let you go. You mean so much to me In my town, rumors they fly around just like airplanes Time is short and the lives are gone All drifting away Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never, never let you go. You mean so much to me Oh, God damn your beautiful I’ll never, never let you go. You mean so much to me
15.
Over Me 02:53
Today I looked I saw the blind man by the sea He spoke to me Yeah, he spoke to me in French In words I could not understand The anger was so clear my friends He said, “baby, you drive me crazy, you’re over me.” Today I saw my lover for the last time Before she went and died With a trigger by her face The wicked angel grinned With humor and disgrace She said “Baby, you drove them crazy, you’re over me”. And there is no more sign of life There is no more time to cry And the night turns fierce when you look at your mother’s eyes.

20 years ago, Portland was a very different town…
I moved to Portland from Los Angeles trying to out run a nasty cocaine addiction and a failed marriage. It took me a couple of years to mend my broken heart and probably a little longer to stop snorting lines off public bathroom toilets but… I’d finally found a place that felt like home. I met kind folks in this city that let me live with them when I had no other place to go. I met others who gave me shit when they caught me doing drugs after swearing that I was clean, I met the love of my life and… I met lifelong friends that would help me make Widows.
Clayton Jones, Daniel Eccles, Joe Chiusano, Marilee Horde and I descended into Johnny Beluzzi’s basement studio (KAOS) in NE Portland sometime in 1997 amongst plumes of marijuana smoke and youthful optimism to try to capture (in three days) the energy and passion of our cathartic live shows. We wanted to record something that sounded raw, ragged and not slick like the country records that were being made in Nashville at this time and listening back now, I think that we did a damn good job of capturing the energy and spirit of the band.
Many years have gone by since these sessions took place and yes, this town is a very different place but one thing that has not changed is the love that I feel for the folks that I made this music with and how thankful I am to Portland for giving me a second chance at life.
